The Ocean Cleanup is a non-profit organisation aiming to remove 90% of floating ocean plastic.

Founded and based in the Netherlands, The Ocean Cleanup designs and develops technology that captures and extracts plastics from rivers and oceans around the world.

How You Can Help

Time: Various

You can make a volunteer application here to help support The Ocean Cleanup’s engineering, research and communication teams.

Alternatively, you could become a volunteer citizen scientist, helping to survey water health in rivers and oceans near you.

Cost: Various

Make a one-time or regular donation of your choice to The Ocean Cleanup, or browse their online shop, which includes items made from recovered plastic such as their signature sunglasses.

You can also donate air miles to the team through Flying Blue, KLM’s and Air France’s frequent flyer program.

Location: The Netherlands, Global

Note: The Ocean Cleanup accepts volunteers wherever they are needed, depending on where they are currently operating. As of August 2021, it does not have a local volunteer programme but its ‘Interceptor’ operations (intercepting plastic in rivers before it reaches the oceans) are predominantly taking place in South East Asia. Please contact The Ocean Cleanup directly regarding operations in your area.
